Building a pot with coils is simple and a great thing to teach a new clay student. I recently taught my students at the Community Learning Center. Follow these steps to make a coil pot:
1. roll out a slab for the base
2. roll out a coil or "snake" with your hands on a table (put newspaper under the coil so it does not stick to the table)
3. Slip and score or "scratch and attach" the coil to the slab using a scoring tool (something like a fork) score the slab and the coil so you create a Velcro like surface on both sides.
4. brush water onto the coil and stick it onto the base to start forming the walls.
5.continue this method until you have reached the desired height then if you want the pot to be smooth use a rib tool to smooth the coils.
The steps for a coil pot are simple to learn and simple to teach and the kids really enjoy it!
