Image Transfers: Using Ceramic Decals

Decals are images that can be applied to works at several different stages during the ceramic process depending on what kind of decal you are working with. Decals can be bought through companies like Bel Inc. These transfers are usually somewhat pricey and limiting in subject matter to choose from unless you send the company a custom image you would like to have printed (which is even more pricey!) Ceramic decals can also be created yourself using images you have created, editing them on a computer and printing them with a printer that uses high levels of red iron oxide in its toner. To do this you still have to purchase image transfer paper and the printer but then the possibilities are endless. Using the same method that Justin Rothshank uses with his red iron oxide transfers you can transfer your own drawings onto your pots. For more information on exactly how Rothshank gets his results you can visit his website http://www.rothshank.com/Justins_Art/Decal_Resources/Decal_Process.
